Emag nerf discussion

Well, most of my points I made here, so I won’t bother copy-pasting them

Recently, two emag nerf PRs have popped up, so I thought it would be a good idea to open up a thread to discuss them.

First nerf PR is this one - Require access to wires to emag by MarkusLarsson421 · Pull Request #9545 · BeeStation/BeeStation-Hornet · GitHub

It makes it so you have to have access to the airlock wires in order to emag them, meaning you’ll have to carry around a screwdriver, and will have to weld/crowbar more protected airlocks.

Second nerf PR is this one - Makes the emag run on charges by CydiaLamiales · Pull Request #9683 · BeeStation/BeeStation-Hornet · GitHub

It makes it so the emag has four charges, each of which takes 30 seconds to recharge individually, meaning it won’t be as spammable anymore.

we did it. We defeated the dreaded supervillain, Emagman

Seems good :+1:
I assume the charges are also used to emag consoles and borgs?

Gosh, so called themselves “Emagman” while there’s nothing special but just spamming emag all over and break everything was one of most cringe gimmic I’ve seen.

Needs to have a speedwelder added to the uplink then, an option to mitigate for more tc.

Speedwelder- looks like a welder, but doesn’t need eye protection to use and works 2x speed. Small item.

There’s a syndie objective in rotation that is literally “make all doors in [department] inoperable.”
I don’t think it’s a gimmick

Yep, the charges are universal.

just make the syndicate toolbox spawn with a syndie welder like that instead, it’s a terribly underused item anyway

The new emag will be a box filled with uranium/iron grenades and a crowbar.

I suggested a Syndicate Integrated Toolset implant. It could work like the normal integrated toolset, but automatic welding protection would certainly be a good thing to throw onto it as well.

This one is terrible and defeats a lot of the utility the emag provides with quick breaking and entering. The other change is great.

Sadly emp bolts doors.

the problem with the emag is it’s free AA for all doors equally, not a good feature. command doors should be ‘harder’ to open then common doors.

Split the item in 2 Just as king solomon intended.
One for Hacking. one for Opening Door

I honestly don’t think there’s a need for a nerf on emag. BUUUUT if you must do one, then just make the TC cost more. That’s it.
I don’t like seeing classic features and tools being basically ruined over time for the sake of “balance”.

The primary use of an emag is getting into secure areas, by making command doors more difficult to emag you’re encouraging emag spam on all the other doors.

Using the Charges idea you could have it use more charges. One Command door might take three charges compared to one, that way forcing you to wait a bit.

If you combine this with my idea you could base the amount of charges on the security of the door. So no shielding would take one charge, iron shielding would take two charges, and plasteel shielding would take three charges.

No? The emag is a really obvious door opening tool. That is the point of the item.
