Removing Station-side Toxins Test Site

Removing Station-side Toxins Test Site

Background

I’ve been mapping all day and just had an epiphany. Toxins is one of the very typical speedrun jobs on the station and is also the most isolated one. You do it in 10 minutes or less and get 50K Research Points, 25K Discovery points and 50K credits and that’s it. Takes one person and no more. At the same time, maxcaps are much more massive on Lavaland and also provide a ton of resources when detonated.

Goal

Require toxins to utilize another department, crewmember or otherwise in order to complete their job at the cost of more time and with the bonus of additional material resources.

Solution

Remove the station-side toxins test site.

Now to complete the job you have to get the bomb to the Lavaland testing site. They maybe be able to do it themselves using the Science shuttle, but ideally they should ask a Miner to deliver it for them as they will also be collecting the resources extracted from the explosion.

If this is too much for a Scientist then putting a beacon on the test site to give them another option of asking AI or any Head of Staff to let them utilize the teleporter in order to send the away the bomb to its target.

Problems

How would you solve them?

  1. A max cap doesn’t actually produce 50K for some reason.

  2. Power is required for it to work. Without power it won’t generate any points.

Additional Information

This is the amount of resources generated from one toxins test.

Discovered some issues with this and added a problems sections. Please let me know how you would solve it.

Isn’t the amount of resources generated from a good toxin test just RNG? the same minerals won’t spawn all the time

It is, but this gives a decent view of roughly how much you would get.

you could make rock yield more resources when blown up also.

Like any piece of rock has a chance to drop random ores when being broken by explosion damage. Let’s say you’re releasing microfissures-veins.

Already done. :3

This is the Lavaland Gulag ore which has a higher ore density.

New miner traitor strat, shoot scientist with pka on lavaland, free max cap! Emergent gameplay let’s go.

I mean, yes! Alternatively, give the maxcap to the miner and detonate it while it is still in their hand.

Both absolutley diabolical ideas that also open up interaction between departments. I LOVE it

Okay, question, so is the whole “remove lavaland” movement dead? Because it sure looks like it.

Also, the reasoning behind this being that toxins “needs more interaction with other departments” is a bit silly to me. Toxins is a (usually) pretty quick job, it gets done at the start of the shift (most of the time). It’s kinda like setting up the SM. It’s not like xenobio where you have people sitting in a room doing nothing but their job all shift, you spend about five minutes on it, then you go do other science stuff.

Plus, this sounds pretty grueling to deal with on lowpop, where toxins is pretty much required for science to survive.

I just really want a fucking xenobio overhaul please

Until Bacon wakes up again, so don’t mention it or else risk encouraging him to work on it again. :stuck_out_tongue:

There are other options. In worst case I’ll add a beacon down there so you can shove it through the teleporter.

What does it change besides needing to harass the cap/the one with AA compared to a normal toxins launch, then?

You can ask the AI or break in yourself if neither Captain, AI, Cyborg or any other head of staff exists.

This is not an interesting interaction between science and the rest of the crew.
Proper roleplay interactions should not be driven by annoyance and should have benefits for both sides, because otherwise this is just gonna be an extra chore everyone’s gonna be annoyed with.

So no beacon then. You want interaction, but then complain when interactions is forced on low-pop. Please decide.

Doubt. You’re literally being rewarded for it with materials.

The goal is:

I think this fulfills that goal elegantly with a possible buff if it turns out to be an issue (the beacon).

It’s not hard to understand, interaction should not stem from a chore. This is not an interesting interaction, this is something a scientist will bother others about, for about 30 seconds, detonate the bomb, leave and that’s the end of it.

Sure you want to add minerals, but all this will do is cause people to be mildly inconvenienced if they have to wait and pissed off if no one replies to them.

Please tell me what kind of roleplay event will be created through this? How will this, in practice, allow for interesting developments to happen?

What kind of roleplay is created from speedrunning toxins?

None either, but at least speedrunning toxins is done extremely fast and leaves no one frustrated from being inconvenienced with little reason besides a misguided attempt to create RP
