I’m with Cali on the manual wheelchair, tbh.
I’ve used them in real life and modern wheelchairs are really smooth to use. and SS13 is meant to be the future.
It’s not so much an issue with it using hands, more speed and ease of movement.

I know tg has a foldable wheelchair, or at least i saw it on two different tg branch servers! That could be useful
That point i meant generally speaking.
I know this is a whole mechanic in itself, but being able to hold wheelchairs but also push them would be sorta fun. Instead of having to constantly walk around the wheelchair to push a person that could get knocked away by someone else walking the opposite axis of you
Using one that isn’t motorized or assisted in some way takes both hands to get around, and a fair bit of effort too. The point of a basic wheelchair is to suck in the same sense that a shiv made from a shard of glass sucks. Nobody makes a shiv unless it’s their only option, and nobody should be using a basic wheelchair unless it is the only thing available at that exact moment.
There has to be low tier items to make higher tier items shine and be worth seeking out.
Nanotrasen is not known for giving its crew the cutting edge, they’re known for cutting corners on cost anywhere they can get away with it.
My immediate response is “that would be dope”, but in a practical sense this would only be used to steal a wheelchair from someone who needs it because the player who needs it will never have a reason to pack it up until they don’t need it anymore.
More medbays should come with standard wheelchairs
I know one of the maps does, or at least used to
Dude. You do understand that this nerf is completely pointless, doesnt help anyone and only harms literal cripples. Why is it good for the game? Nerf for the sake of nerf.
Quite the opposite. Having backup wheelchair in the bag can sorta save paraplegic person from this scenario (if second wheelchair isnt stolen too seconds later). Having foldable chair opens a lot of transportation opportunities - climbing over tables, disposals riding, spacewalking and just having fallback option for moments when motorized wheelchairs cell is bricked. TG had this feature for years and it never became an issue.
@Blerpfish your character used one for a while, what do you think about it?
Bad faith claims and takes like this just make me not want to engage.
You act like I’m standing my ground on this not being an issue at all when I’ve already said paraplegic wasn’t a focus of the change and I’d be entirely fine with it being fixed in any number of ways as long as it doesn’t return to viability the use of vehicles in active combat. I’m not arguing that everyone should suffer through the basic wheelchair, I’m simply arguing that it should continue to exist as the barbones basic item it is because a better version already exists that solves your problems with it and is very readily accessible. I even offered to make it available at roundstart to paraplegic players so only those visiting medbay with mid-round paralysis ever even see the normal wheelchair, and only until they upgrade.
Then bring it here, I definitely don’t see it causing issues. It sounds cool.
Sorry, i misunderstood you. So you’re cool with wheelchair revert?
I’m actually dreaming about attempts to implement a lot of things, but i cannot even launch localhost ![]()
To be as clear as possible on my stances here:
Normal wheelchairs can be faster than they currently are, but they should not be as fast as normal movement speed is for other players. If you want to take away the hands requirement, that’s fine since it only needs them for motion rather than control.
Motorized wheelchairs should always be and feel generally better than normal wheelchairs because they take more effort and materials to make.
Any vehicle which moves faster than normal speed should lose control and crash when bumped into anything or anyone.
If the requirement for hands is removed in general (not regarding wheelchairs, but other vehicles), any vehicle should crash when taking damage, instead of just tanking hits like nothing happened until they fall apart. This should extend to the rider taking damage as well.
I’m not okay with a “revert” but you’ll have to bear with me for a bit to understand why:
Wheelchairs themselves weren’t changed, at least not directly - the PR that caused this new behavior was a bugfix.
REQUIRES_HANDS is a vehicle trait that most vehicles have. Skateboards don’t, Wheely Heely’s don’t and motorized wheelchairs don’t. All others do iirc. This is the same PR which barred simplemobs (which don’t have hands) from most vehicles.
I do not think reverting the PR is a good idea, but changing which vehicles require hands is fine. Adjusting vehicle speeds is also fine. But at the end of the day, the PR making wheelchairs require empty hands was just making the flag already on wheelchairs actually do its job - The question shouldn’t be a revert, it should be whether wheelchairs should be using that flag.
Notably there’s also a flag for REQUIRES_HAND which is for a vehicle requiring only one hand, but it is also bugged. I didn’t fix it because it is entirely unused right now.
i do wish we just gated nerfs off completely beyond community voting. It would prevent ending up with stuff like this where a feature is essentially just killed off and you can feel the spite in the code. This is hardly the first time this has happened.
The moment I last-used an ATV, I immediately realized that it was completely worthless, and I wasn’t doing any combat, it was for cargo stuff.
Anyway…
For more direct feedback: Wheelchairs being various degrees of bad is perfectly fine and suits their purpose. Vehicles sharing such downsides is disgusting, however.
If the goal is not making the vehicles meta, simply reducing their durability greatly will do the trick without making every single person who ever gets on one feel like shit.
I also seem to recall that wings are bugged on people with unusable legs, or rather, they can’t float up with them properly, which is another extremely feelbad situation, especially considering that wings are actually very detrimental for any combat due to slowdown, so it’s not like a get out of jail free card by far.
lore/setting arguments for gameplay balancing changes
excuse me while i bang my head against the wall until i fall unconscious
PS: There will always be a meta. As soon as you nerf one thing, another becomes the best instead, and you can keep going until everything feels like shit. Of course, making nerfs that aren’t explicity meant to fuck people over is another story.
Had to search a bit, 2020 pr lol… Maybe there’s a modern one but yeah
Also agree with Perished there were other ways to tackle the issue, durability being one.
Yeah it feels ridiculous that there’s NO WHERE ELSE that you could POSSIBLY store an item while sitting down
maybe add a storage container on wheelchairs :3
Regardless of the finer points, I think at the moment the current nerfs are essentially the same as just outright removing wheelchairs, ATVs and the like altogether. They have the same relevance now as clipboards, seed extractor bags and handheld slime scanners; they might as well not exist for all their prevalence in the game
Woah Woah Woah Hold that Horse and let them drink from the river because you need to stop right there buck-o,
Them some cruel strays your throwing out. I love clipboard, and seed extractor bags with most of my heart.
Clipboard I cant even BELIEVE got mentioned? Like how do you store all your papers?? Folders??? Dont make me laugh!! They dont even hold pens!!!
And my BOY Seed Extractor Bags! Every botany round im using them! oh but Berry theres a big machine that does the same thing but gives you more then one seed WHY DO I CARE? ITS ALL THE WAY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF ROOM, and also like why would I need 17 seeds, you know im putting perennial growth in those bad boys or just like- using the multiple plant harvest to get multiple seeds and fuel the replanting cycle. I dont know what to say but Seed Extractor Bags did nothing wrong leave them alone
Slime Scanners sure, Xenobiologists are glued to their chairs like a 13y/o on a WoW quest fueled by nothing but Dorito’s and Mountain Dew, they do not need anything beyond more RAM to splitscreen minesweeper and slime rancher
Sorry Rasp, but folders come in colors, so you have a relevant colored folder on you depending on the documents in it, whether it’s blue for Command, brown for Supply or Engineering, white for Medical, or red for Security. And no, you only really need one pen on you at any given time, and that’s the pen in your PDA! Not to mention folders are easier to draw papers from and are also generally smaller! Concede your arguments and admit folders are superior in every way!
The Fland red folder ordering incident…
I now have a suspect…
mech plasma cutter also just got nerfed to fire super slow, which i was told was a “fix”.
really annoying for mining or trying to fight bosses in a mech now, and it feels extremely like a rage nerf of its own.
just felt like sharing because my first reaction was “man, this just feels horrible now” which is the same as atvs
