Based on this thread Llol111 conduct report - #2 by Crossedfall I’d like to open a healthy discussion. This is not to throw shad at Crossed, llol1 or Twingo, but rather a conversation between the community to share our views and that thread is a good starting point. There are no wrong answers here, but rather different people.
It seems a chunk of the community enjoys characters like Will-eyam, whose entire identity is basically being a dude that harasses women. I myself, as a clown, will often get people’s shoes and sniff them or make custom emotes about interacting with other characters feet (for example, tickles their feet or sniffing or whatever. I can say I only have once gotten a clear negative OOC reaction, and a lot of people seem to be very fond of this humor, specially the typical self aware felinid player and the people who tend to gravitate around them and their humor.
Do you like this humor? Do you think this is ok when the 2 people find this humor to be funny or is it a behaviour that you wish didn’t exist in the first place?
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the most keen on what is and isn’t considered fetish content, I’m a very basic and boring person and in that same vein I have a hard time seeing any one-off action involving feet as sexual.
The reverse of this is also true though - if someone makes their entire round gimmick or character trait to be obsessed with feet, it’s hard not to see it as fetish in nature even if it’s purely an IC one, and that makes some people uncomfortable pretty quickly. Nobody should be shamed for feeling uncomfortable around perceived foot fetishes, or any other things that creep or weird them out either.
Obligatory warning that this thread and posts in it have a high chance of being 1984’d depending on what is said because of my latter point.
It depends on what ones motive is behind the joke. Is it sexual or not? A clown stealing someones shoes to sniff them is just funny weird. A guy stealing only womens shoes to sniff them is just creepy and sexual in 99% of cases.
I don’t mind sexual jokes, but if you harass randos with it it becomes a problem.
I mean I got a ban or a warn or something for making jokes about drinking piss, then recently a headmin posted a joke about drinking piss in the 6 hour messages channel. It’s never been consistent. The answer is just to not make jokes like that lol
You need a kooky dude every now and again.
Mia and Angus were exploring maintenance together the other day and spotted a poppy. What followed was a really funny crime scene bit where Angus got down on one knee and whispered the “Topaz has been here…”
Mia and Angus then search the nearby maints rooms, finding a stained mattress, cuffs and a camera.
Mia was screaming, Angus was holding back vomit.
(Note that during all of this William was not even on the server.)
Banger bit.
All inspired by one funky fella.
But yeah Barteg is right you have to be able to put him in the hospital if needs be. Not rr or murder or anything like that. Just some good old fashioned ic conflict.
I think we do have a pretty good culture for that in this server though.
I haven’t been made uncomfortable by a player, basically ever, but that’s mostly because I’m hard to make uncomfortable. However, make no mistake, just because it doesn’t make me upset, doesn’t mean that I’m blind to what happens.
Things that are objectively awful that I’ve seen:
Serving “shit” and “piss” in the kitchen.
Beating up a random dude because you’re annoyed as security.
Playing with cyborgs too hard.
Walks up to you. *Sniff. (remove this emote)
Selling naked clones en masse.
The line between cringe and funny is often thin, however. To keep things topical - Twingo’s characterization of lizard Will is unquestionably horrible, though that might be intentional. On the other hand, I’ll always remember Uga doing his best to impress random women, caveman-style, for being a genuinely good bit.
The joke is that he is more of a Barney-esque character that constantly hits on girls. It’s not actually going after people and making them uncomfortable with words, the character will often just offer flowers to girls and if they run away he will chase them until they accept the flower. It is not as bad as you think it is.
I think some of the humor is very distastful, especially the sniffing of other people. In reality this would go straight to HR. Sadly SS13’s only HR is HoP who doesn’t care and heads who have other things to do. So this behaviour is just perpetuated.
Don’t forget that two times a admin filled a shuttle with toilets and renamed a couple of burned messes to “brown stuff”
And yes I do hate the sniffing lizard to a point i’d round remove him on the spot if I had not a couple of bans and remarks on my ckey as I find it rather bloody gross as hell all that sniffing.
Normalize telling people on LOOC to quit it when unconfortable.
In my honest opinion, either answer IC or tell OOC to fuck off, whining on the forum or making player reports/ahelps doesn’t solve anything, and I am sure EVERYONE that plays in the server would Immediately respect either of those outcomes.
1)you embarass players who may have done a bit without malice, who now have to justify something they didnt even think through cause it was an improv bit
2)you punish people for trying to do something different
3)you put yourself/the admin who handles this at risk of being metagrudged (This is a bit of a far reach, but could happen)
All in all, its a lot of hassle for a very minor thing, that two capable adults should be able to handle by themselves while playing play-pretend on the internet
I don’t know about you, but in my opinion, a private message is a lot less embarrassing than being called out publicly over LOOC where dead players and everyone around can see you telling them off.
