It is that horrible time of year again, where we all share our awful taste in music, much like the last year. Though, unlike last year we our dear friend and senior admin, Jix - also known by his ckey: Joelogbybulb, is not with us. Jix was the man who started the whole “Your music SUCKS” meme after I rightfully and subjectively critiqued members of beestation who was only listening to video game music and anime openings. I will miss you Jix, but I won’t miss hearing Radiohead and NMH.
Now, please share with you your spotify wrapped and or other music recaps, or just some songs or artists that might have had any impact on you this year.
Ebba Grön – We’re only in it for the drugs (Their first album, also came out in 1979 (a great year for punk), they went on to become THE swedish punk band, everyone in sweden knows the lyrics to one of the songs they covered “staten & kapitalet”)
KSMB – Aktion (The second biggest swedish punk band, this was also their first album that also came out in 1979, tons of great songs on it, highly recommend that you listen to at least a few of the songs on there)
Not a Spotify user. But as before, I’ll share some top 5 (last time it was top 10 I think, but this year felt weaker in terms of releases to my taste) album of the year contesters for me.
“Zwart Vierkant: Slotstuk” by Grey Aura.
Genre: Avant-garde black metal. Chaotic spiral into madness, lyrically and musically.
“Moiré” by Cold Stars.
Genre: Honestly calling it folk is more than a bit understating, it’s a rhythmically complex and harmonically bizarre acoustic guitar experimentation with some calm vocals.
“The Distaff” by Maud the Moth.
Genre: Experimental post-rock, very sadboy stuff.
“The Spin” by Messa.
Genre: Post Rock/Doom.
“Doomed” by Defacement.
Genre: Dissonant blackened death metal with post-metal elements, both the sad and extreme parts hit harder than a redneck at their family reunion, the contrast between them is pretty dynamic, and dynamic composition is a rare gem in metal.
