Your CKEY (Including any alts you have): WhiskeyMarten
Your Discord Name (Including any alts you have): whiskeymarten
How often are you online to help? (Timezone): I am reliably available between 22:00-02:00 (UK Time, GMT presently) on most days.
I am unreliably available during the day, from about 13:00-18:00. I am currently on part-time work but I am looking for a full-time position so this may change.
What changes, if any, would you bring?: I don’t think I’ll change anything too much. Mainly, I’ll be an extra pair of hands to sort out reports and whatnot. I’d hope I can use my experiences to help shape future changes, as my voice would hold a bit more weight than it does now.
If I could change anything, I’d hope to see some more planned events as I believe that would get more activity especially if it is a regular (even if infrequent) thing to look forward to. But I know I would need a lot of help from more seasoned admins to pull it off.
How old are you?: 23
Why do you want to be a moderator?: To get everyone off my back about applying- JOKING! JOKING!
If I didn’t genuinely want to be an admin I wouldn’t be bothering to fill all this out. Ever since I picked this game up, I’ve been completely bonkers obsessed with it. I’ve been roleplaying for over a decade but the way I’ve done it has been long paragraphs over text on a forum. I’ve found the fast-paced improv style of SS13 to be really refreshing, and while the gameplay has taken longer to catch on, I really appreciate how varied it is.
Why do I want to be an admin and not just keep playing? Despite enjoying almost all of the time here, nobody can deny that there are frequent problems of varying importance. Now, I don’t think I’m bursting in to save Beestation, but if I can make any difference, like helping reports be processed a bit faster, making players know more that their issues are important, and being a voice for the “new crowd”, it’d be worthwhile. I also generally want to break out of my comfort zone, and find even more to love about the game.
How long have you been playing SS13?: Since March 2025, so around 8 months. All of this time has been spent on bee.
How long have you been playing BeeStation?: Since March 2025, so around 8 months. I currently sit at 700 living hours in-game (and 161 ghosty hours).
On a scale of 1-10, how skilled are you in SS13?: 5? I have niche interests in-game, and though I am very knowledge-hungry out of game, much of what I know isn’t practised. I am quite clumsy with controls, so my gameplay isn’t too sharp but y’know I see my improvement every day.
On a scale of 1-10, how skilled are you as an administrator? (this can include past games): 6. I do not have any experience admining on SS13, but I have held admin/moderator positions in other games (peaking at 100+ online at once), websites, and discord servers. I’d be more than happy to elaborate on this if needed. I have handled banning players in this game, investigating various issues mostly relating to naming rules and enforcing players chat messages. I also managed the staff team of a related website.
Where I would dock points here is that there wasn’t really much real-time management of situations like griefing. So I lack experience in a big aspect of ss13 admining.
Have you ever been an admin or moderator on another server? This is not limited to SS13: None on SS13, see above.
Do you have any alternate accounts on SS13? If so, could you provide their CKEY?: No.
Your strengths: I find a lot of joy in long monotonous tasks, and I don’t think I would have any problem with stuff like scouring through logs or putting information together on a case.
I think I am generally very approachable, I really enjoy helping people or directing them to resources for help. I’d really love to be able to talk out rules and disputes with people and use the knowledge I have. I also happen to be chronically online on discord to do this. I have helped many new players in-game already (mostly in medbay and cooking), and it makes me really happy to see them flourish.
I think a lot of people will consider this a weakness so I’ll cover it in both sections, but I’ll fight for it being a strength. I am new to this game, at least in comparison to the people around me. The reason I joined Beestation is because I wanted a server for new players. Why does it matter? I think having the perspective of someone who still vividly remembers their newest days, and has gone through the struggles of a newbie is really important. I believe now I have gained some experience I can now reflect on my early days and use them to aid the team.
I also happen to have a very clean record ![]()
Your weaknesses: I’ll start from where my strengths section left off. I am very new to this game in comparison to the current admins and many of the players around me. Even though I have been told I have enough hours already, I do still feel very new. It is possible that some reports/ahelps will be harder for me to deal if it relies on niche knowledge, though I really want to learn everything I don’t know and I do try to read up on stuff outside my expertise. My biggest worry is handling engineering/atmos mishaps as that is my least understood department but I’m very confident that I’ll be supported in it.
I do get quite anxious trying new things. I am pretty confident that I can handle a ticket or report about anyone as I’ve done this in the past (I have had to investigate and ban close friends of mine permanently in the previously mentioned game), but I am a bit scared about having to real-time fix problems. I’m sure this is something that training will alleviate, as usually once I’ve done something once I’m happy to do it again (for example, I recently needed someone to look over my work setting up SM for the first couple times, but since then I have set it up myself multiple times without fault). I’d be mortified if my attempts to help a situation end up in angry players but I know things happen.
I am a very emotional person, good and bad. It is something I am pretty open about. I have gotten a lot better, throughout my life and also from my time ingame, but I still feel my emotions very hard. To my credit, I think I am very good at recognising when my emotions are affecting me, which has stopped me from taking it out on people wrongly.
Is there anything that gets you really mad, real fast?: I don’t know about “really mad” or “real fast”, but these are the things that annoy me most.
Going after a kill target for the first time on the shuttle. I know there are multiple reasons why someone would opt for a shuttle kill. It just feels cheap to me, and like they’re only doing it to check off an objective instead of incorporating it into their character for the round. Of course, circumstances often mean that your plans get thwarted, or the target is incredibly hard to engage with. Or maybe you’ve spent the whole round tormenting them and this is the finale. I’m not talking about that, those circumstances are fine, just people that wait to try anything at all and just want to check a box at the end.
Impatience. I get it, we’re on a time limit every round, so it can be frustrating having to wait for something. HOWEVER! It really bugs me when someone opts to break through and get what they need because they don’t like to wait for 10 seconds. It is especially bad when you consider many players are new and learning, and they won’t learn if you say, break into science to start researching instead of letting them do it (as an example).
What do you think is the most important trait for a staff member to have?: Gonna use the same thing as the next question - communication. Staff members *need* to be able to communicate, both talking and listening. Even if you’re the most knowledgable person in the world, if you aren’t listening to people you will no doubt miss key context, mishandle stuff, and frustrate people.
What makes a staff team good?: A good staff team is one that is very communicative. I’ve been on multiple online staff teams in the past, and the worst thing is when you can’t get a straight answer from anyone when trying to discuss something, and you’re just talking to a crowd of people mumbling “yea whatever”. You need a team that
-
aren’t afraid to voice their opinions
-
have the availability to discuss matters when needed
-
will be able to talk frequently with players
-
are able to make themselves understood, especially when handling reports. I think this last point is the most important for staff.
What is a staff team’s purpose?: The staff team’s purpose is to ensure that players are generally satisfied and entertained. Part of this comes from rule enforcement, as a large part of player satisfaction is affected by people breaking the rules (griefers get old, fast). Another part of this comes from engaging with rounds, either as a player or observing, to enhance things, especially when they’re going slow or if characters open up a unique opportunity to intervene. It’s the sort of thing that makes rounds feel extra-special.
What kind of player are you?: I try to be a reasonably grounded-in-reality player, and maybe one that gets a bit too focused on the job aspect, even though I do think I make good attempts to engage with my coworkers. Those who work in medbay with me often can attest that I get a lot of enjoyment in setting things up, making medicines, doing bounties, etc.. I am trying to be a more *proactive* player, than just a reactive one.
How do you think you will change once you become a staff member?: I think I’ll try to play more variety of characters, maybe even go under random ones. Not that I’d abandon the character who I basically share a name with ooc at this point, but I think it’ll be a different experience when people know I am an admin.
I also want to try to engage the lower pop hours more, so hopefully playing more at those times.
The clown slips the HoS and steals his gun, spacing it right after. What do you do?: Firstly, I would check whether the clown is an antagonist, and what his objectives are. If they are an antagonist, they may have reason to want the HoS’s gun out of his hands.
If they are not an antagonist, I would ask the clown why they did that. They may have what they perceive to be a valid reason - for example, security may have been hassling them all shift and they may have seen this as a proper IC action. That being said, the gun is a high-risk item, and I would consider it a self-antagonistic/grief action unless there are really extenuating circumstances.
I would remind the clown that their role does not allow them to do that sort of thing, and they should keep any pranks harmless and *funny*. The goal is to entertain, and they only have any leeway at all to pursue this and not just whatever they want to do.
I would check whether the clown has any notes or bans. If they have existing notes or bans, I would likely give them a Clown job ban (and Gimmick, Assistant, and Mime as per policy). I may give them a shorter server ban as well. If there was no justification at all for the actions, I’d up the severity. If they had some arguable justification where their actions didn’t seem intentionally malicious (even if it’s still a rule-break) and no prior notes/bans for similar behavior I would consider leaving them just a strongly-worded note.
A non-antagonist is sabotaging the Atmospherics loop and pumping plasma into the distro, along with dragging around a canister and releasing it into the atmosphere. Assuming that an admin is cleaning up the after-effects, how do you conduct the ahelp with him?: Very naughty! I would ensure they are moved to jail for the duration of the ticket, so that they can focus on resolving it with me and can not cause further harm. First question, of course, would be asking them to explain themselves.
I also would be checking their hours at this point, and whether they have any bans here or elsewhere. If they are a low hour player, this could be indicative of a griefer/ban-evader, in which case I would be applying a permanent server ban.
I am not really sure what kind of justification they could give for this. This is an incredibly harmful action liable to cause mass-damage and casualties falling under rules 8 and 9.
A chemist who is working alone accidentally mixes an explosive mixture inside of his chem dispenser, instantly killing himself and destroying the machine, along with exposing Chemistry to space. Nobody else was injured aside from him as a result of his actions. What do you do?: Given that they only hurt themselves, I wouldn’t immediately suspect that this is a sign of grief. I did not learn what Stabilizing Agent was until AFTER I mixed nitroglycerin for the first time.. Yeah, you figure that one out..
I would ask the chemist what they were aiming to do. I would also check their hours, and chemistry job hours. I would also check their notes and bans to see if they have a history of blowing up the lab or other places without cause.
Given the question says “accidentally”, I would assume the chemist will let me know they didn’t mean to do it, and tell me what they were trying to do. Of course, I wouldn’t know this until asking which is why I go through these steps.
I would caution the chemist to please be careful in the future, but assure them that these things happen. I would also let them know how they can prevent explosions in the future (Stabilizing agent, not overheating beakers, being aware of all the chemicals you’ve left inside) so we don’t immediately have a repeat incident. I would hope that they tell me *why* they were mixing explosives as well. There are plenty of valid reasons to do so, but I would want to make sure they aren’t just making grenades for the hell of it.
If they do not have a history of doing this, I would be satisfied with the chat we’ve had. Perhaps a “secret note” could be utilised here as making a mistake isn’t an inherent rulebreak, but could be used to look back on if this happens multiple times (do tell me if I am not interpreting the use of secret notes correctly)? If they have prior notes for this behaviour, I would apply a temporary ban from Chemist (and I’d guess medbay alongside this?) and advise them to read the chemistry guides on the wiki before they try again. Multiple notes/bans may warrant a longer server ban (+ even longer job ban).
