Tired of boxslop

I’m getting tired of the box slop.

We use to have map diversity to keep things fresh for people, now it’s just either meta or box. The same layout gets stale after a while.

I’m not sure why we got rid of Corg station, we got rid of echo and kilo because they were supposed pop killers. But with the low pop we’ve been having it seems like a good time to bring them back, or at least update them.

Removing maps made it a lot less fun to go exploring the stations layout, because we already know where everything is and the maintenance layout.

With the current pop we have. The only two maps we have is box and meta. We don’t get card, delta and the confusing as fuck fland.

Playing the same map consecutively, no matter the quality, will always screw with me because I’ll think I remember where something was, only for it to be wrong and I’m confusing it with something that occurred the round prior. Being subject to repeated confusion every time I decide to play for more than one or two shifts a day is extremely draining.

Box, Meta and Rad are not lowpop-friendly. They are almost unplayable with a skeleton crew unless at least a few people are locked the fuck in on maintaining it, and this can easily be undermined by a single determined antag/griefer (a problem shared by lowpop maps but for different reasons). Forget playing them solo; unless you can flawlessly and quickly set up the supermatter, you’re going to be spending upwards of an hour doing 6 different jobs just to get the solar panels to a state where they can sustain the station.

Echo and Kilo were never “pop killers”. They were signs that pop was already low. For some reason certain players are so averse to playing lowpop shifts that they seemingly attribute low pop to these maps rolling. Getting rid of 2 of the 5 commonly rolled maps just because they have a poor stigma due to association with pop being low, would be like cutting off my foot because a stubbed toe makes wearing a shoe uncomfortable. Absolutely insane.

Furthermore, nobody asked the general playerbase if Echo and Kilo should be cut. While I doubt a poll on it would be enough to bring back either map, due to aforementioned certain players. I can guarantee you it would not be unanimous to get rid of them.

Corg was an awful map if you didnt work in medbay or cargo, it was literally just a long hallway across. And since when did we get rid of echo and kilo? Our other maps are for higher pops, if we get to it some day youll see them.

Been like two months

Echo and Kilo been disabled eversince the last Pubby TM since they wanted to make space for new maps or something , but pubby is now stuck in review limbo for awhile since everyone is busy in these past months leaving only Box,meta and rad

Honestly we should like lower the pop requirments for like card, delta and fland since half of the time half of the maps are unavalable

I agree that Corg wasn’t great but I also think it was preferable to what we have now which is the same three maps. I remember I played 3 shifts back to back and all of them was on box. We either need to get new maps or have the bigger maps open on lower pop.

Corg was removed due to complications in its structure (from age) that would’ve caused a lot of pain for Development and contributions to account for if they had kept it. While its removal was likely for the better, Echo and Kilo were removed from rotation for no explicitly communicated reason with the player base, and the bigger maps never roll because of their minimum population requirement.

I think Echo and Kilo have been gone for long enough that their re-introduction into rotation would outweigh the negative connotations associated from them just from being able to experience fresh maps again, and it’s not like the average population can drop further than it’s currently at. At the MINIMUM, create a poll asking players, rather than just sweeping it under the rug and hoping everyone eventually moves on.

Everything hurts?
Ask the chemist at the medbay for some bicardrine and kelotane.
If it still hurts, it is probably radiation.

Could be cellular damage

Mayhaps poison..

If you can walk to the medbay and ask for a prescription, it is unlikely to be poison or cellular damage, but yes. I just didn’t want the joke to get too long

What maps are in the game is not really something I have any influence on, but I want to adress some things here that are just wrong or misinformation.

No map is. Box/meta are decent lowpop maps because it is easier to grow in population there.

If we are talking extremely lowpop like <5 connected people, that means there is like one or two actually playing.
At that point you either have:

  • One group that sticks together and roleplays somewhere → Map size is not that relevant but if you do decide to split up then multiz is actively making it feel less populated
  • People do singleplayer/duo massive sandbox projects → Echo limiting jobs is directly detrimental

I believe bacon at the time even came to the conclusion that limiting job roles is not a good idea.

I’m sure you have an explanation for population dips when echo rolled or the people who mentioned they wouldn’t join/left, when echo rolled then?

Are you referring to the 5-6 (ingame, not forum/discord, so active playerbase) map polls that were run over the course of 1 year-ish and where echo ranked last and kilo second last pretty much every single time?

People also forget when just last winter echo used to crash the server straight for like a week or two, or all the inherent flaws with multiz, problems that arise with it, fighting on stairs etc. Echo was never a map that worked well for it’s entire lifetime.

As I said we all have our own opinions and like different things, which is fine, but I wanted to clarify a couple things that were mentioned here which were just wrong.

My own personal opinion is that I would much rather have a cool new map that does not have the same inherent flaws echo has.
In the end development can only sustain a limited number of maps and I would have this spent on maps people actually enjoy playing and are not flawed in a multitude of ways.
