Ban Reason:

“Seemed to be trying to get vaguely homophobic/political (judging from past history) over a silly meme, we won’t tolerate this here. Please avoid this in the future!”

I said “Can we not lgbtq-ify children’s games”
While replying to this image

Appeal Reason:

I dont think this was homophobic or political at all. If its a subject that’s vaguely political, why are they allowed to bring it up but Im not to comment on it. This statement of mine was subjective yes, so was the op’s comment they gave while sending the image.

If I went on to say that Donkey Kong was a mucho macho hotshot who gets all the women and has sex with them that would be weird and raise their eyebrows. This one is saying Wario is a polyamorous bottom. Thats sexual. Thats definitely sexual and say Wario is someone who fucks a lot with multiple people and takes it.

That doesnt belong in a conversation about characters of a children’s videogame.

Additional Information:

As someone who was exposed to sexual content from a young age, I really hate seeing people do that to children. And although they didnt do that here, since kids arent allowed on Bee, that doesnt mean someone resharing that image elsewhere, sourced from here wont achieve that either. This would never have happened if they didnt sexualise characters of a children’s videogame.

And by my understanding, genderification is sexualisation as gender is what you use to describe who you are attracted to. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I had issues related to genders and how to treat people and whatever, but what am I supposed to do? Ignore them if I cant react positively to what they post?
(Which begs the question why they cant do the same for my comment)

I genuinely ask this so I wont run into this again.

If by “avoid in the future” you meant that, please tell me directly and I will do so.

Talking about a character being a bottom, sure, that’s not appropriate for children, but how is anything else there inappropriate?

This is incorrect.
Me informing you that I’m a cis-male (my gender) does not in any way inform you of sexual preferences (or potential lack thereof).

Pointing out that a character is gay/lesbian/etc. does inform you of the gender(s) that they find attractive, but not in any way that’s different than pointing out that someone’s straight does.

Would you be equally opposed to “exposing children to sexual content” if Peach were to kiss Mario?
No, of course not, because that’s something that literally happens in the series and no one bats an eye.

In the end, the problem with how you phrased things is that you implied that LGBTQ+ content is somehow inherently sexual and inappropriate for children. This is a common political talking point that homophobes/transphobes/etc. employ and use to spread their particular views.
Now, I’m not saying that you are a bigot or that you were trying to be political. In fact, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, which is why I suggested a zero-point warning to the staff that pointed this out and ultimately gave you the warning.

This is a server that aims to be welcoming to all people, and any sort of bigotry, even when it’s unintentional, is not tolerated. If I thought you were intentionally being bigoted, this would be a very different kind of appeal.

So if I had instead said “Can we not sexualise children’s games” instead it would have been fine?

From my past interactions with the lgbtq community, everything related to them is sexual and for this reason I thought of the two as being interchangeable. I see now not to apply my personal beliefs and make some research before posting shit.

Thanks for the clarification

So this is a very difficult topic to discuss due to how inherently political it’s become.
I swear I am doing my best to be apolitical, but just to factually discuss the topic I’m going to have to be a little political.

Essentially it’s going to boil down to just letting everyone know that BeeStation is doing its very best to be a friendly, inclusive server. We won’t tolerate bigotry of any kind, and due to the unfortunate state of the current geopolitical landscape we find ourselves in, LGBTQ+ people and communities are seen as one of the most commonly-accepted targets of bigotry and discrimination.

This is a hateful stereotype that stems from those who are against LGBTQ+ people.
Put simply, it is designed to make it seem like LGBTQ+ people are somehow going to victimize children with their inherently sexual behavior.

Now I’m not terribly familiar with a lot of history of countries besides the USA, but these modern attacks are essentially the same attacks that were used to discriminate against black people here in the USA several decades ago (and still today sometimes, unfortunately). One of the most popular forms of this attack is “Think of the children!” They will try to convince the public that the group under discussion will somehow pervert children with sexual degeneracy, drugs, violence, et cetera.

It ultimately breaks down into trying to create a moral panic in order to convince the public to go along with the bigots’ “solution”. There was segregation and Jim Crow back then and it’s anti-gay and anti-trans legislation now.

I do again want to point out that I am not accusing you of being a bigot. You simply spouted what happened to be a bigoted talking point, and I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming it was simply through ignorance and not malice.

I hope this is a learning experience for everyone involved and it will lead to more positive interactions between everyone in the future.

As for the Wario power bottom part of the joke:
It’s simply a random, slightly risqué joke that is commonly seen about many characters in many forms of media.
Whether or not the character involved is LGBTQ+ does nothing to affect the nature of the joke.

One of the reasons we moved to being an 18+ server was to give users a bit more leeway with making risqué jokes occasionally. Obviously you shouldn’t be telling sex jokes to children and that’s not something that happened here.

I forgot to say that you can close this as I understand I shouldn’t have said what I did how I did. I try not to be actively anti-anything, I’m just very ignorant to the world and when I say something I don’t agree with I tend to forget there are people on the other side of the screen.
