I want to start by saying that I do not main or significantly play as a security officer. However, I do play as the Brig Physician quite a lot and while there are definitely people with bad attitudes and wrong behaviour, not every security member is a power-drunk psychopath. More on this later, but you might ask why is this an issue. Well ever noticed that when late joining most of the job except service and security is taken? Why might that be? Sure service is not filled either but that is usually because people dislike the lack of power gaming in these roles and the is a lot of slots so it hardly gets filled. But security is is most of the time left understaffed when players have a chance to pick anything else.
What does understaffed security means? It all good right no one to beat you and limit what you can carry (weapons) right? But in the wider scheme, it leads people to believe that security is incompetent and that they should take matters into their own hands (Valid hunting, revenge sprees).
So while playing as security is not that hard from the game mechanics standpoint it really is hard on you as a person to have constant pressure from everyone on you. On one side everyone calls you âshitsecâ the moment you arrest or search someone. Then captain expects to result from you. And it feels like admins could ban you for a single bad move. Because if you mess something up it affects the game of other players and that sucks for them big time unlike the chemist that when he fucks up he will just blow himself and chem up and so on.
So no one really wants to play security as it is a huge responsibility while others will just hate on you anyway by default.
Yes, security does wrong things like bed cuffing striping etc. but so does everyone else they are just not held to the same standard. When for example did you saw robotics ask for permission to build a combat mech? Never they probably donât even know they have to or ignore it. It is the same with security, sure you are supposed to know your job well enough before playing but that doesnât mean you pick security the first time and you immediately know everything. This is further complicated by the mentioned fact that often people pick security just because itâs the only thing left other than service so they might not be very aware of how to play security. Or even players who do play security might not know or might not think something exists or is important to the SOP.
We hear all the time from guides " as security try to be as polite as possible" but that should work the other way around. Yes, maybe we shot you with a disabler and cuffed you without saying anything. That might be bad, but did you consider there might be a reason and that we donât want to execute every crew member? Yes, security is not perfect and it might be a negative experience for you but that is the case for every department, not just security so try to be cooperative and not yell âshitsecâ second we try to do anything.
Of course, if you are in fact a traitor trying to stain security and throw them off their mental stability is valid. (But donât expect to be released just because you cite space law to them and call them slurs when the first thing you do when set free is to attack them the first thing you do. )
If you are a non-antagonist trying to make the process smoother will go a long way.
I will end my very bad rant here although there is much more to be said about this I am probably not the right person to do so. I do apologise if this is unreadable and doesnât make any sense (Bad grammar/roleplay ban when ?)
As the final note the topic of many arguments I heard so far: Is Space law just guidelines or should it be followed to the letter on MRP?
