Yeah on golden everyone can do anything so it like whatever if you are sec or you just raided it for lasers but poplimit is not a thing for golden because golden can almost never reach full pop so why bring it up here .

To be fair, this really deserves a code solution.

Some sort of pre-round visual and indication about jobs being filled/not filled and opportunity to correct. There’s no reason a 20 man station shouldn’t be adequately filled.

The issue is not binary, there is more to it than just filling slots. The main issue is some necessary jobs being very unappealing for the majority of players, making mains of them rather rare. To fix that issue “we” have to fix the cause, not the symptom.

This might be a bit idealistic but I believe that a decent amount of players are flexible and will be willing to change their roundstart job to fill needs, right now this isn’t really reflected unless you deliberately abstain from joining roundstart.

For some jobs mains are rare because you just can’t stand spamming the jobs. Geneticist is a good example, fine every once in awhile, but mains don’t exist for obvious reasons.

At that point we are getting to rebalancing entire game and changing parts of the code I dont believe that is something that will just happen.
Like what do you mean for example? Engineering? Yeah it fun to thinker with engine but entirely useless since there is no use for more than backs amount of energy. It’s fun to repair broken section of station but when that happens crew will usually just call shuttle or even if you repair the area they likely wont reinhabit it making it again pointless.

But why is that? Every job has the potential to be mained but some are simply more tedious and annoying than others. This is where the changes need to happen. For Geneticist alone I can think of a few fixes: Import TG UI, a few more toys to play with and voila. It does not need much usually to make a role interesting for a sizable, albeit niche group of players.

That literally happens every day. The amount of merge requests is pretty damn impressive on github. Something along the lines of a “look at this, this needs more love” note for coders would be great.

There are engineering mains, that shows that the job has it’s appeals and is not completely lost. But what engineering might need is more things to play with /work with when there is no fixing and things that are not mega projects so that even a few players can have their fun with it. Surely there are engineering mains that can tell me what they feel like is lacking.

It needs some depth and continuous intrigue, or at least interaction to be mainable imo.

tgui would make it a lil less painful but still monotonous.

There’s job content that I’d like to port (e.g. for chef) but i dunno for genetics to be a really good job to main it needs a lot.

that is (I think) easily fixable by just merging new mutations every now and then. Repetitive tasks are only bad when the player feels like they are tedious. People main AI for example despite it usually playing out fairly similarly.

that I agree on. But I still believe that those are things that can easily be fixed. It does not need a complete rework of Genetics, just some quality of life improvements and more depth.

The same goes for (almost) all other unpopular roles. The only role that truly needs a complete overhaul is curator imo.

In terms of essential slots that should be filled every round Security is by far the most urgent matter.

I am engi main, or at least was until recently because of mentioned lack of activities. And that is even worse for atmos techs.

For gene I would propose something like cooperation with xenobio that would breed space monsters and then gene could dissect them and give the monsters powers to crew.
But that is straying outside of scope of this thread sorry.

nope, around 50-60% of the games I was on for as RD or sci during the 40pop, nobody was doing xeno. (am i too late for this conversation?)

40 in my opinion is not nearly enough for a full crew. Others are saying 40 pop felt almost empty and I completely agree.

Think of all the the jobs that will go without being staffed with only 40 people.
60 is the only thing I see working if we had to downgrade.

I don’t see any real reason to drop the pop down from 70. I think it’s fine the way it is.

We are and have always been capped at 60 for as long as we’ve had a cap.
