Official Clover Announcement

We are proud to formally announce our third server, BeeStation Clover!

What is Clover?

Many of you spent weeks creating the wildest guesses imaginable. Some of you randomly guessed correctly. A few managed to actually figure it out (Seriously, there were so many giveaways).

Clover is a MRP Goonstation fork. It will be playable in Q1 2021.

That’s it? It’s just a Goon fork?

Kinda. More experienced SS13 players might have asked themselves at some point, “Hey, why aren’t unofficial Goon forks a thing?” That’s because Goonstation uses a very complicated and convoluted API to handle… essentially every major system. Neither the API nor documentation surrounding it are publicly available. This makes running a Goonstation fork… difficult.

Francinum (with some help from qwerty) spent several weeks reverse-engineering the API and writing their own implementation. Some of you know this as “Cloverfield”.

Why should I play on Clover instead of Sage?

Unless you’re a seasoned Goonstation veteran, it is a completely new experience. Goonstation has been developed independently of every other codebase for roughly a decade! There’s loads of features that other servers don’t have (and can’t, due to licensing).

What are the longterm plans for Clover?

We (mostly) don’t have any! The future of Clover is determined by the community’s interest.

If it maintains a steady playercount and interest, we’ll keep it going and start developing features independent of Goonstation.

What about Sage and Golden?

No changes are currently planned for either server as a result of Clover. However, you should be able to use the Server Hop verb to jump between any of the servers once Clover is live.

What about Goon’s secret content?

Obviously we don’t have access to this, so all code related to having secret content has been nuked. If Clover is a success, we may begin developing our own secret content.

Will Clover be open source?

Initially no. To make things a little easier to maintain, the initial release will be hosted from a private repository. But, there are plans to publish a release which can serve as a quick-start for anyone looking to start their own Clover fork.

Is all of this legal?

Yes.

Some other things…

A few other minor bullet points:

  • Sage and Golden are still our primary servers, and still take priority over Clover.
  • All of the admin tools are completely different. Please be patient with the admins while they adjust.
  • An active serverban from Golden or Sage disqualifies you from playing on Clover. Jobbans from other servers do not apply to Clover.
  • We’ve been in contact with Goon for a fair bit of Clover’s development, they’re not being blindsided by Clover.
