JimmyHandrix - banned by Access denied

nevermind I found him. I’m PMing him now, thanks

host wasnt able to help, please close the thread.

Are you sure? This doesn’t seem to be resolved.

My mans gave up after all that effort ???

it isnt resolved, but heres what the host said.

“There’s a sticky ban system within BYOND that helps us identify ban evaders using an alt account. It basically checks to see if a ckey has any matching IPs/Hardware IDs and flags them for us before disconnecting. The problem, is that you’ve been flagged but BYOND isn’t reporting it to us so we have no way to unflag you or grant an exception. Worse still, it disconnects you before you can actually connect to us, so, we don’t have any way for us to code in a bypass.”

To clarify on this, the issue is that there is a bug in BYOND that causes ghost sticky bans. It’s extremely rare (to the point where I thought it wasn’t even relevant anymore) and has to date only impacted 2 people here and 3 people at TG (that I know of).

I have tried to work with MSO and Lummox to resolve this, but we haven’t been able to make a lot of progress due to the nature of the issue itself. Disabling the sticky ban system entirely might resolve the issue, but sadly we rely on it to detect ban evasion.

I’ve reached back out to Lummox for support, but I can’t guarantee a solution at this time. It’s super frustrating but I’m sadly unable to actually do anything to resolve this myself…

what if you disabled it temporarily, I connected, and then you enable it while im on the server?

as soon as he enabled it you would get banned again

wouldnt you be able to figure out whats causing the ban tho?

It’s not really a toggle system. I’d have to either disable the database entirely or rip it out of the code. Neither of which are great options.

As for it giving us more info, I’m not entirely sure that it would. We’d see that you could connect, and then (most likely) we’d see that you can’t anymore. I can try something, actually. It didn’t work with the other person I troubleshooting this with, but who knows. I can create a new stickyban for you and we can see if it actually registers or not.

okay, i tried connecting and got hit with your sticky ban message.

Fresh sticky worked, timing it out reverted back to the ghost sticky. Modifying a pre-existing sticky to catch you so we can exempt you also didn’t work. Bleh.

Still trying to think of potential solutions/workarounds. The only workaround that we’ve seen is from TG, and it’s one they built for their admins. Basically, it cached the entire stickyban database, deleted it, allowed the admin to connect, and then put all the bans back. We briefly implemented this and it brought the server to a crawl whenever an admin joined.

Small glimmer of hope being that the only other person I’ve seen this happen to had it randomly resolve itself one day. So, there’s that at least.

alright, deny this or whatever. thanks everyone for trying.

TG LRP is a good alternative IMO, only problems I’ve found are that the players are generally quite toxic and the antags have even freer reign than on Bee LRP. (As in there’s a very good chance if certain players get antag you will get rolled and can’t do anything about it)

LOL WHAT? i can connect now. thanks everyone, i guess byond decided to stop being a dick.

Welcome to the glory of BYOND code.

Works 100% of the time, half the time.
