H42 Staff Report

Date (YYYY-MM-DD): 2025-10-22

Round Number: 54362

Rules Broken (if relevant): N/A

Part of Admin/Mentor Conduct Broken (if relevant): Impartiality and transparency (?) Ruling Disagreement

Incident Description: There was Lia Brinigh, a changeling who killed the engineer near round-start (Uncertain on this information; Multiple in-round ghosts claims to be so - Further investigation and details required on this part), strip and stuffing the engineer into the crate and shoving that crate into the solar maints that was far South West of Box station, which seem way too extensive and put an effort on hiding the dead body they killed.
Though through the ticket, H42 claims that hiding the dead body into such location where is very seclusive and rarely passed by, is not a high impact action on the changeling’s side. This is the part where I have a heavy disagreement, as the engineer has been totally permanently removed as they were never found until the end of the round. I’m positive no one would’ve been ever checking it even if there were no shuttle call and got the round lasting beyond 3 hours.

I’m going to provide some context since round-end ghosts isn’t exactly something one would put in a .bib file.

I was the changeling that round, I had the objective to replace the acting captain and also to steal the nuke disk.

I got the idea to replace the engineer working alongside them, cause an engineering issue and then attack the CE while they’re trying to fix it. They wouldn’t expect an attack from an engineer fixing stuff around them. This went right only half of the way since the CE happily followed me into a secluded corner inside engi immediately upon our first meeting.

The issue is that if I want to impersonate someone it implies they’re not to be found so the cover stays on. I ahelped to check if that’s alright and was told to go ahead.

As for stripping and putting in solars - if you want to impersonate someone you need their stuff and a secluded place where an assistant won’t see you changing clothes.

From the start, I will say that I agree that H42’s categorization of the kill as anything other than high-impact is incorrect. However, I don’t think that their overall ruling was improper.

Looking at it from the antagonist’s perspective, it makes sense to strip and hide the body of the person they had assumed the identity of. Especially in this case where they were planning on using it for an extended time. I think this particular circumstance overcomes our usual rules on high-impact kills.

Notably, I think it overcomes the “unreasonable and unnecessary” disclaimer in our rules. I also think the context allows this case to overcome rule 13.4 as well. I wont split hairs on whether or not your final resting place was impossible to recover. The goal was definitely to put you in an extremely low traffic area.

13.3.5: Put in additional, unreasonable, and unnecessary effort to make a victim impossible to recover.

13.4: Eliminating non-target crew in a way that does not directly serve your objective is usually not permitted.

It can definitely suck to be removed from the round, and I can absolutely empathize with that. I can also see from your perspective how it might be against our usual rules against high-impact kills. But, in this particular case I think it’s justifiable for the changeling to act as they did.

It wasn’t a random kill and they didn’t hide your body without reasonable justification. They were fully assuming your identity to gain the trust of their final target, and had to take measures to ensure that you wouldn’t be found to prevent their own demise.

In summary, given Tapczan’s testimony and the brief bits of context I could gleam from the logs– I’m inclined to side with H42’s ruling. No further actions will be taken.

To note, cases like this will almost always be pretty subjective and context dependent. Contacting an admin in advance, like what Tapczan did, is definitely the right choice.
