Add material converter

So I had this idea and argued over it with franc I’m too lazy to summarize it go check out the thread it happened in: Add back bluespace miners - #52 by Francinum

Contrary to popular belief, materials are not scarce. Problem comes from lack of access restrictions on lathes, where people gleefully print out their gamer gear before even bothering to upgrade manipulators or so much as using their one braincell.

They print out a few dozen artificial bluespace crystals despite there being 42 in the ore silo already.
Then they pull out a few 50 stacks of metal and glass, put it into their backpack and go patrol the station hallways.
Then someone decides they absolutely need 2 stacks plasma to never leave xenobiology again while accumulating 200 slime extracts in the fridge that never get used.
Then bartender grabs 50 uranium to mix some table decorations.
Then a few people get a bag of holding so they can carry more stacks of metal and glass, maybe a few RCDs just in case.
Meanwhile robotics is printing mech parts with basic parts.

More access restrictions you say?

gonna have fun on lrp having to thermite 5 times to get fucking metal

seriously did you mean to post on crapola ideas thread

No this is how he is.

Simple solution: Just make a slime extract that converts resources at a MASSIVE plasma cost. Xenobio can already make nearly infinite plasma.

Emagging a material converter should force it to convert everything in the ore silo into bananium.

I actually love that idea. XD

Also, does anyone actually realize that the recycling reclaimer works or that the destructive analyzer…gives resources back when items are deconstructed?

There a million and one ways to get infinite resources without exploits or BSMs. As much as i loved them, they were a pain in the ass to setup, get running, keep running and they were hella slow.

My solution is either buff Cerulean crystals again (Removing their debuff.) or just add a slime extract that converts resources at a massive cost of their plasma. You could replace one of the stupidier extracts with it anyway.

Wait, people use the recycler for something other than grinding up dead bodies?

No…? There is a material reclaimer on all stations. It looks like the smelter on lavaland? If you redirect the trash to it it will convert whatever it can into mats. The rest is spaced whenever someone bothers to fire the mass driver. I do it all the time as cargo tech.

I have legit never seen anyone use it like that before. If I ever see anyone use it its for something like this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqc3meeYS0w

I am talking about a completely different machine. Hold on.

This thing that looks like a BSM. Its a material reclaimer. It…reclaims materials and puts them into its storage buffer for later use. Its how i always have metal as a cargo tech even when there is no Ore Silo or anything. Swarmers never even think to eat it.

Two ways I can think of to fix this.

Budgetting resources through multiple ore silos is one way. 50% of everything the station collects goes in a general pool that all fabs can draw from while everything else is split amongst ore silos dedicated to one department a piece.

The other way involves paper work, have the fabs keep records of what was printed and by who and give Hop authority to ask the jani why the fuck he needs 50 fire extinguishers.

Hellmageddon option. Have fabs require people getting written approval from hop first before use and then you hand in paper to a cargo tech who prints the stuff out for you and passes it over the counter.

Ore Silos already do this actually.

The only materials which you cannot purchase from cargo are intentionally limited for scarcity and balance.

Says this why allowing Cerulean to exist.

If you want better accounting for lathes we can just give science back their omnilathe and restrict what materials a silo can hold, since it’s main justification for existing was supplying said derivative fabs.

They frankly shouldn’t.

You see normally i agree with you on things. But not this. Ceruleans were nerfed already. Nerfing them even more (Or into non-existence) is probably a pretty bad idea. And since you arent the one working on Xenobio extracts anyway i dont think you want to touch my suggestion to actually fix them. Which is just restrict them to duping only base materials instead of what…everyone who knows how good Cerulean does is get 1 Diamond, 1 BS crystal, 1 Uranium, and then 1 Plastelium and 1 Reinforced Plasma Glass and just dupe all that. All resources except for copper right there but who uses copper for anything?
