Talking about minifans and holofields i noticed a lot of stations airlocks to space lost their tinyfans ever since LINDA went through so.. most of the time it’s a pain in the ass to shove a locker in or someone because you get pushed, and if people start opening the airlock before the exterior one closes you lose all the air fairly quick
Everyone does seem to agree holofans were good at 6, i suppose you can justcarry two in the mean time until someone does ?WYCI
Not all mappers embrace the forbidden technology of a 2-tile long airlock
Or maybe regular airlocks should be brought back. With a shorter delay to skip and added inability to interrupt from exterior (so validhunt mc officersky can’t endlessly spam it to their side while you try to leave) they would be nice.
While being 2 tiles long of course. 1-tile controlled airlocks were designed in hell itself.
By this point it just feels like the mappers all forgot to place tiny fans for the expo shuttles. Kinda feels like we’re progressing backwards sometimes.
You nerfed holofans in order to promote the use of something else you ported, holofields. Since that, holofields have seen barely any use and is much harder to set up than just clicking in the tile you want to put the holofan in. It is pretty valid criticism that you should not bring 2 holofans to do the job you did with one before, if is not making people use holofields anymore and you can circumvent the whole nerf by bringing another, then I would argue just revert the change or, like I did, make an advanced version with 6 that can be unlocked via science.
This all feels like a weird bandaid, the nerf is not useful since you can just print more and holofields still are barely used. Lose-lose situation. And as they said, they do not even have the same uses.
Honestly i think this might be the right option. I’ve had ideas in the passed about making a directional window holofield, having an advanced one that can produce both fulltile and directional fields would be cool, then upping its capacity to something like 9, which directional holofields taking up half capacity. Also now with combat mode it seems easier to do that, rclick for full, lclick for directional. plus the old holofield item looked out of place when you had a full inventory of advanced tools
Problem I find with holofields (referring to the onces projected by machines here) is that since they rely on wire power they are very unreliable without additional setup like a generator or SMES unit close by. If a mouse bites a wire, well, that nice little plasma-man room with a holofield just leaked everywhere. Holofans don’t have this weakness.
If holofields had a way to draw from APCs I can see them being much more reliable and useful.
It’s going to be a WYCI moment, but how about a compromise:
Holofield projectors are reduced to 2 charges and place holofields:
A lonely holofield blocks atmos on the current tile exactly as holofans currently do, with a swirling energy barrier for doorways
Upon placement and periodically holofields look for other holofields in the four cardinal directions and if one is found, a wall of holofields is formed between the two points instead.
This removes the fugly holofans and also makes the projectors more adaptable to seal any single line of breach. Two projectors is all that’s necessary to make a large square barrier, capable of closing off almost any breach.
Regarding mapping: Holofields should be expanded to all maps to replace tiny fans at this point.
Look at Rad Station’s AI sat. It has tiny fans around the AI for the AI to have sound. replacing them with Holofields will be Fugly.
Also, Unless you enjoy playing the game with no sound, Not even door sounds, don’t recommend removing them. Here is my post of me recommending adding them and the reasons during Rad’s map testing Radstation feedback thread - #168 by Rust
The main issue for practicality for Holofield Projectors aren’t just the ability to seal a breach, its a couple more things. Mainly the requirements to even build and activate the machine itself.
Requirements
Needs powered cable underneath
Needs to be researched
Requires wired machine frames and parts
Requires Plasmaglass a part
Has small texture to click on
I think we start here by lessening this harsh level of requirements to even make the thing and keeping it running.
I’m not sure if this is even possible but, is there a way to make a machine possible to activate without a cable underneath in a powered apc room and still activate with a cable out in space?
If so I think the holofield projector would fit in this sorta inbetween section of quick and practical usage?
I think you’re misunderstanding my compromise offered which makes them simply place to activate.
I’m suggesting that they be placed with a dispenser that works similar to holofans, but generates a wall between two points when lined up. No cables or wiring, perhaps needing APC power.
