Where to get help: other players, LOOC, mentors tab,
Basic character creation
Lobby screen: Round info, observe vs join etc.
UI
Basic Controls
Hands system
Basic Intent system
Inventory system
How to find your way around: webmap, lines, signs, otherplayers, wallmaps
What to do if you are hurt
What to do if you are attacked: run and/or scream for help (how to)
What happens when you die
Good basic “assistant plus” jobs: janitor, curator, CT
Introducing the game through jantior I’ve found to be shite. If you have a guide then assistant (where a HoP can assign you), doctor, geneticist or chemist is better. Chemists because it’ll be fun seeing them mix meth explosion that was written on the floor. lol
how to use internals
knowing what the resist button does and what hotkey is set for it
how to pick up bodies instead of dragging them
maxing suit sensors
how to disconnect properly by using cryo
and here’s a few dont’s:
don’t get into fights until you know the escalation policy and understand what valid-hunting and self-antagging are. so no playing antag or security
don’t touch the SM without knowing how to operate it (do solars and turbine instead)
don’t touch toxins without knowing how to do it
don’t stay on a non-help intent if you don’t need to. it look suspicious and you’ll probably cause an accident
don’t suicide
don’t disconnect because you were captured/killed by an antag
every job i consider to be low impact and/or beginner friendly:
assistant (obviously. greytide memes aside, the assistant’s job is to ASSIST the departments and that’s a good way to learn the game without any pressure)
geneticist (cloning people is really easy and researching mutations is optional. practice surgery when you’re not busy)
cook (put eggs and meat in microwave with a tray, done)
bartender (good practice for chemistry)
botanist (this can be complicated but only if you want it to be. all you really need to do is grow food for the cook)
janitor (replace broken lights and become everyone’s best friend. cleaning messes isn’t too hard either)
cargo tech (just move crates and give everyone bounty papers. good for learning how to navigate the station.)
all gimmick roles
A section on the front page of the wiki called “Shortcuts” or something. Been playing for several years, these are still things I need to reference and can have trouble finding.
Shortcuts are also a good way to reinforce what you have learnts. You don’t just know you got different body parts you can target but also a keybind for each body part!
Most new-new players wouldn’t be so lucky to join at the start of a round anyway, most likely they’ll have to pick after it has started. And I think spawning on the arrival shuttle is a bit more immersive than appearing in your work area from the get go.
I can agree with that. I personally think most jobs that don’t including needing to interact with many people aren’t great for newcomers.
Janitor can be fun for sure, however a lot of it involves making your own fun.
Personally, the best jobs to start with are the following:
Cargo Tech - for helping you get suited to station’s layout as well as learning some basic skills (however can be limiting for some)
Chef/Bartender - learning how to cook/mix drinks in one of the chiller parts of the station is great for newcomers which can lead to playing chemist (downside being that cooking and drink mixing can be differcult for people to learn straight away without support)
Most service jobs are pretty newcomer friendly imo and should be considered for people starting out on ss13, as long as they are able to interact with others in a meaningful way.
It’s partly why I love HoP so much. It’s a interaction magnet though I don’t expect new players to play HoP in the case they are stuck acting as captain.
Botanist, Clown, and Mime are very hostile to new players, with botany having a fairly complex system to learn while still figuring out the controls, and clown and mime being self explanatory.
Don’t do [any complex job] you don’t know without mentor on your side.
Mentor will correct your doings, and they will teach what is what, and what does, or doesn’t do thing accurately. Even if you make a mistake, mentor will correct your doings at the spot, so you take responds immediately. Not to mention they will notify to the crew members about your doing, so you don’t take full responsibility when you tragically fail.
Having a mentor means a lot.
there’s nothing stopping you from learning how to do these things by watching someone else first. losing the SM in particular has a huge impact on a round and will make you unpopular. would you want to be responsible for that as a new player? i wouldn’t
There’s nothing wrong with trying to learn from others, there’s definitely something wrong with not learning at all. If your opinion of a new player goes down because they tried to learn, I am unsure what to tell you.
