Implying the patients won’t just throw themselves in the box to speed things along.
When they themselves know they only have brute, burn, toxin or suffocation damages? I doubt it.
If they got more complicated issues then yes, but it might have to be activated from outside so you’d need the attention of a doctor to get the report.
We can already do this though, talk to them and after all that you scan them with the health scanner.
I don’t see what the box adds to it besides replacing the health scanner to a slow stationary more unreadable health scanner.
Plus this, most people just want a fix-up and be on their way to continue what they were doing.
You can already see this from people already jumping in the sleepers and want you to push the heal button.
Are you though? One click and you got all your answers. No questions asked. How often do you hear the lil’ beep? I can walk by medbay and have 5 doctors beep me like moths seeing a lamp bulb.
You can’t activate it from inside yeah.
So many changes happening at once with medbay, and all making the medbay require more work and more understanding.
-medbot changes
-scanner removal
-blood rework
Hot damn
Depends, is it medical rush-hour, or is the person in a rush (like an engineer who is doing their project that just want a quick-fix)
Replace this with you walk by and they throw you in the box, I don’t think it’s the health scanner that’s the issue.
I don’t see what the box adds to it besides replacing the health scanner to a slow stationary more unreadable health scanner.
No, no you got it. it’s a big bulky machine that is stationary. It forces the location of diagnostics to be inside of medbay, not the hallway, maints, in space like it currently is. You can still heal anywhere, you can still inspect them, ask them what’s wrong. But full diagnosing must be done in medbay.
Even without the analyzer and instead of using the penalty box i can:
-
throw them in the sleeper and then that gives me an instant health readout to fix 90% of the reasons anyone comes in if they’re still alive
-
If they’re dead, tend wounds surgery, then try to revive them immediately. That can give me time to go back to step 1, resets the defib timer if they die immediately after from blood loss/other organ damage, or tells me what else they need to be revived
-
Jump straight to surgery If they’ve got some traumas/aliens/zombie tumors they’re aware of. The latter two would die much more easily with the penalty box anyway because of the time they’re spending in there unless this also adds a side benefit of the penalty box/radiation slowing those things down
Although now I’m thinking about irradiated zombies that have a chance to become high-functioning zombies
You phease it in a cool way but Wilson’s idea of adding functionality of a health scanner on other tools like the stethoscope is really needed for Paramedics
After thinking and re-reading all the points made through the thread i’ll have to agree with Wilson and Suzuki last post
There’s no difference between a doctor booping you with a health scanner and then providing you with the correct medicine than the doctor grabbing you, putting you in and making you wait some extra seconds, and then giving you the medicine, the original PR mentioned those stuff about the stethoscope, penlight and such and they do promote doctor to patient communication, far more than the health analyzer or the machine.
I believe we should aim for a little bit of both:
‘‘buff’’ the traditional methods so they’re more used (tweaking how they work?, highlighting the flavor text of the functionality of the organs so it’s more clear on the chatbox, adding more to the roundstart vendor/doctors kit, etc)
And keep the others, both machine(keeping one roundstart similar to stasis bed) and health analyzer as research since it still falls on ‘‘SS13 Is a Research Station’’ so if everything goes smooth the player can get a sense of progression in terms of technology and the equipment they can get, sometimes they won’t (as it happens with no stasis bed, or the same health analyzer not being researched) and you can still keep the radiation of the health analyzer just for ‘‘experimental tech’’ vibes until they research the advanced one.
I think this is a very good middle ground
As someone who enjoys playing as doctor from time to time I absolutely hate this idea. It does nothing good for the RP. It just makes healing people more annoying. Health scanners are just essential part of the game. Most of us are not trained doctors in real life and we have no idea how to exactly diagnose a patient. It is just a way of in universe tool that replaces years of studies and experience allowing ordinary people to get an idea what might be wrong with patients. We probably should get more possibilities of diagnosis without using one, but deleting them would only make diagnosis more annoying for both doctors and patients. From my short experience best RP always comes from someone wanting to be involved in it, or situations that happens randomly. There is no randomness in doing the same long process over and over again.
For example, when someone comes in I ask for what happened and then scan them. Usually it’s enough to start conversation. If I need to operate even better, I can make some fun conversations during operation ranging from “oh I need to get some morphine first”, “sure doc” I inject it into myself and ask if they want some too, to saying that this is my first day on the job, or that I hope I will not get sued for malpractice again, etc. It all comes from willingness of both parties. If patient wants to get healed quickly then I will do so.
Throwing someone into bio scanner and forcing them to do the same process of long diagnosis over and over again just is not fun, and may result in avoiding medbay for as long as you can. If you want to RP with doctor then do so, do not be forced into it, it will suck for both parties involved. If you really want being a doctor more involving then rework or delete the sleeper. This whole thing will just lead to people annoyance. There are more pressing issues then just messing up with medbay mechanics to make them more annoying.
Or even adding ability to doctors and paramedics to check some parameters without any tools. In theory IC we are all trained professionals and I am quite sure that doctor with years of experience can generally say what is wrong with certain person without advanced tests. They will not know if someone has a cancer or vast brain damage, but for example based on IC experience they can say that a bone is probably broken, they are suffocating or have serious burns that need to be treated asap.
Can I weld people into the bioscanner tho
I think you’re being purposefully obtuse here, that’s not some unanticipated revelation.
Then?

Your PR doesn’t change medbay.
No, but it changes outside Medbay. Brig Phys, Explorers, Xenoarch, Miners. None of them can now with a click of a button self diagnose themselves and then treat themselves.
