As seen in the removal poll thread, it’s not going anywhere, but the aspects of Fastmos that are actually annoying people can be adjusted. For the record: Fastmos saves a ton of server power and prevents crashes, meanwhile old Atmos was the most unstable and intensive part of the game.
Anyway - Use this thread to post about what you want to see changed in Fastmos, and how.
I assume space wind is what annoys most people but I’ve heard complaints about insta-floods and I personally hate the slow airlocks. Let’s see where this goes.
skin suits make you go way too fucking slow, the firedoors take fucking forever to open and half the games i play they’re closed the whole round for god knows what reason, the SM is a shitfuck now, spacewind is the most annoying fucking thing i think i have ever seen if you’re trying to play engineer, airlocks sometimes keep you bolted in them for 5 hours and never open. it COULD be cool, but it needs a fuckton of tweaks for it to be considered an upgrade to the old atmos.
Traditional Atmos isn’t coming back due to the massive performance improvements of new Atmos. Our best hope is to modify what we have ATM. Bringing back traditional Atmos without the downsides would involve modifying Fastmos to simulate it, in that sense (something which I doubt will happen to that degree).
If the station has engineers/atmostechs doing their job repressurising is manageable.
Shuttle being a deathtrap and requiring skinsuit before boarding to survive it is kinda meh.
But even then if there are more than 2 holes anywhere atmos distro cant keep up for longer than 5-10 Minutes, even if all is set up for maximum output.
Partialy because gas control computers only allow a output pressure of 4500.
I noticed one weird thing with this atmos which makes me hate it, although I’m not 100% sure it is really happening. Sometimes, when there is a breach, nothing happens, gases move as if we had previous atmos still, or even slower, but other times there is a breach and milisecond after that whoosh and entire atmos from hallway is gone. If this is happening, is it intentional? And can anyone confirm that similar things have happened to them before?
The shuttle gets de-pressurized WAY too fast. In my opinion, entire rounds (And most of them at this point) revolving around atmos are becoming very annoying.
Another thing. It feels like heat damage is separate from pressure or gas amount. Which makes it very problematic when there’s barely any gas, like decimals of moles, but that are in the thousands of Kelvins.
It deal damage. And there is no way to deal with it other than adding some cool gas which is not always possible. Especially if you play as benos. So entire zones are rendered untraversable with no way to fix that. And sometimes even open space is “too hot” to survive and you just die.
Which becomes an even bigger problem when all humans are dead and shuttle can’t be called because there are enough “players” alive and comms consoles can’t be broken because nobody can reach them alive due to that.
EDIT: It does not always happen but when it happens it is beyond frustrating.
Speaking as someone who played exclusively on HRP servers for the first five years of his SS13 life, I was born in the fastmos. It worked very well on HRP for a number of reasons, a major one being, pun intended, atmosphere. Random chaos and explosions aren’t the order of the day. There are no bombings because no one has figured out how to bomb stuff on HRP without getting banned. Here, chemistry and SM explode just about every shift, while some jokester throws a minibomb into the disposals loop. Beestation spacemen don’t want to deal with such trivialities as CONSEQUENCES!
The other issue is that fastmos is being dropped onto 10 years of slowmos mapping and coding. Nearly every space ruin, gateway mission and cargo bay is ruined in one way or another by fastmos because they have been designed without concern for the air all getting sucked out into space. All these solutions like cycled airlocks and directional firelocks and skinsuits are all like plugging a leaky dam with chewing gum.
But I figure my griping will largely go ignored, so here are a few mechanical details that make fastmos more tolerable on the HRP servers.
Full-tile firelocks that don’t open by walking into them. They have to be clicked and you have to go through a dialog box confirming you want to open the firelock. When there is a major pressure difference between the firelocks, flashing lights on it will warn the spaceman not to open it, and it will refuse to be opened without a crowbar unless you have engineering access. This brings back firelock crushing, which shouldn’t have to die for Ike’s vanity project
Sub-bullet: Better firelock placement especially in maintenance
Placing emergency space suits (or skinsuits in our case) in the blue emergency lockers scattered around the station to conserve storage space for our intrepid spacemen, and to add a little more utility to the lockers. They already have masks and tanks, after all, why not suits?
Instead of holofan projectors, baycode has inflatable doors and walls that can be deflated and reused. They’re stored in a lockbox like mindshield implants, and can be found in EVA and engineering. They’re pretty cool. In our case, we could just make the holofan projectors more plentiful. Make them general engineering tools instead of atmos-tech exclusive.
Make magboots a standard part of every suit storage unit. On HRP servers, it’s second nature to switch on your internals and magboots before cycling through ANY airlock, so in case of explosive decompression, you don’t go anywhere. Seriously, I hate that magboots see so little use when they’re so useful.
More hardsuits for medical and security. For as much time as these two departments usually spend in vacuum, you’d think they’d have a little more EVA gear. At least medical. Please. Givetheparamedicaspacesuitatleastfortheloveofgod
But the real fix would be to kill fastmos. Hope this helps.
The away missions are all terrible, true. Especialy for the Wizard defending their academy. If you’re not wearing your skinsuit and are on running internals in 30 seconds: You’re toast.
make the shuttle doors auto-bolt as the shuttle leaves
seriously, every round some Eats-His-Ass opens a single door a second after the shuttle leaves
and forces everyone into slow as fuck, 0 temperature and damage resist skinsuits
