Code question: space

what would it take to replace getting cold in space with instead getting hot? is getting cold in space a result of it being a certain temp, or is it just “you are on a space tile, inflict cold”?

furthermore, could we alter space to inflict minor mutations a la a very weak radstorm? what level of rad protection would normal EVA suits need to ward it off if so?

They are normal tiles set to 0 pressure and a specific temp

so given that heat is borked, making them inflict heat would probably fuck atmos, huh

Space tiles have a specific pressure and temperature that nothing can affect.

so heat infliction would either require:
A. space to be hot, which makes no sense
B. a considerable rejig of how temperature on tiles affects temperature of bodies atop it
yeah maybe not

what’s this for more specifically

just curiosity, primarily. all the talk about realistic thermodynamics recently had me thinking, “what would it take to more accurately reflect what walking in space is like”

This would mean space should have almost no effect on something’s temperature because open space is not truly cold or hot - there’s not enough matter for energy to dissipate.

Even in areas where the temp is technically bonkers, this holds true.

Voyager 2 reported temperatures in excess of 30,000k around the heliopause - ten times the melting point of tungsten. But there simply isn’t enough matter to actually transfer that heat to the craft and destroy it

One of the major challenges for spacecraft to get over is how to regulate temperature

correct! what this means in turn is that your space suit has no way to interact with the surrounding environment through the usual means of convection and conduction; possibly the more advanced EVA suits have in-built heat sinks/coolant/radiators, but a naked person or a skinsuit wouldn’t. your body still generates heat, so you end up cooking yourself in space along with being boiled by cosmic radiation.

atmos can exist on a space tile if you use passive vents its just constantly being removed thats all

It’s the same with any atmos exposure to a space tile, not just vents and injectors. The atmos exists until the next tick it is removed and temperature reset.

Space tiles kinda work under the assumption that they contain all of infinite space.

Hard to program that.

Me and Ruko had a long conversation when I learned space tiles could be destroyed. Technically, you could make an alternate “space” tile that’s different than the rest of the actual space tiles to do whatever your trying to do

Make space tiles printable at the RnD lathe with alien tech researched.

The biggest flaw in SS13 atmos is that, if you completely clear a tile of all air/atmos, it will still retain its temperature.

That’s uhh, realistic?

Aside from heat conducting to other tiles, which doesn’t happen
