Bribing people as antagonist

Earlier this week as a VIP traitor (same round as the infamous “Your Grace Rampage with 37 people dead”) I literally paid 5 grand to the mime to become my escort and partner in crime, which resulted in said mimette reviving me and aiding in my escape to a secluded pod (which earned her an additional 15 grand).

Needless to say, based RP with no self-antaging murders on her behalf.

Huge difference between actively helping/joining a traitor who bribes you and simply looking the other way to save yourself. One is an act of self preservation and the other is full-scale betrayal for the sake of greed. Both still make sense to some degree, but I don’t know a single admin who will punish for the self-preservation situation unless you were, say, security or the captain.

This is a really good example of the 50/50 dillema. I can easily see this one starting a debate or having the outcome change based on who reviewed it at the moment. There was some RP incentive to assist the escape and minimal direct harm caused, but the person still went out of their way to help a known bad actor escape from being someone else’s collateral damage.

You can be bribed by someone who isn’t an antag that still wants something. It’s not overly likely, but it’s still a possibility.

For someone who helped write the rules, you’re really kind of misconstruing them with your responses thus far. The rule isn’t so ridged that if someone attempted to bribe cargo for something, or attempted to bribe a scientist for 10 minutes on the protolathe, it’d result in everyone involved getting ejected. It specifically targets people who…

Willfully [assist] known antagonists

If the antagonist isn’t known/outted, then there is plenty of room to play with. It comes down to the presentation of the bribe and what the trade actually is. Obviously someone attempting to bribe the warden for complete access to the armory shouldn’t happen under normal circumstances; but, regarding lower level bribes for access & items, I don’t see the problem at all.

Edit:

For the specific example given, this is far too on the nose and even in roleplay settings where everyone involved performed to my expectations, I’d still say this was weak and the CE should realistically deny any offers you give them under most circumstances.

It doesn’t have to be money, it can also be butt pats.

When I play viro I always attempt to trade clowns laughter juice for shit I find in maints.
Also have you noticed how every felinid wordlessly trade contraband with each other for a tail pull?

ss13 economy is real but it’s not money

I willfully helped known antagonists many times, just because security/command slighted me.

If you want to have fun, just don’t get caught by admins having it.

I disagree with that what I’m saying is any different than what you just repeated

The prior responses have, at least to me, all been with the belief that any bribery automatically outs you as an antag. Which I don’t think is the case at all and why I said that there is plenty of play within our rules.

For the greater RP angle being discussed, to be honest this is a two way street. If you’re lazily going up to the CE asking for the blueprints in exchange for space credits, that’s arguably the weakest laziest form of RP bribery. If you go at it with this approach, don’t expect others to go along with it just because. Further, if they decline the bribe that doesn’t automatically make it “fail RP” either.

It should also be noted that none of this is the same as the Devil antag. That’s a bit of a bad faith comparison to make. The problem with the Devil antag is that it is an antag and a very obvious one. Not only that, but the trades they’re mechanically able to make are/were fairly underwhelming; meaning crew rarely had a reason to actually make any deals.

In the wiki this is encouraged, you could even get an officer addicted and start bribing him with drugs

E.g you die in and medbay just forgets you exists and a guy offers you a instant aheal but if you die again you dead for good (better then sitting for a hour waiting for ghost role or medic to show up )
E.g miners are not working or non existent devil offers infinite mats (wealth) for your soul as long you dont die your a living bank
knowledge-free xray got removed one of a thew ways to get it very useful
friendship-free assistant to bully sec/bully anyone/help escape jail/suicide bomb and more

all powers give very cool reasons
you can roleplay as Nazeem from skyrim with the wealth contract and just bribe everyone to make you new captain

I spoke primarily about the extreme cases so that’s on me. The core to being able to play along is IC plausible deniability as well as OOC Bee staff being able to believe someone is playing along in good faith when the bribed player gets reported for self-antag.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to immediately know OOC that if someone is bribing you, they are 90% of the time an antagonist and that makes the entire thing a grey area to me when it comes to self-antag enforcement, especially from player-to-player standpoint where staff justification for punishment or not acting is murky at best.

“Well they did it and weren’t punished” is often how a situation is perceived when the player was noted as doing something wrong. Often since an antagonist is involved staff are forced to give very minimalist replies to tickets when round is still going as well.

Or threaten them with a gun

Also the only person you can roleplay is corporate suckup, anything else will result in nanotrasen will not have hired you, resulting in poor rp and a ban
