Add more bees…..
The problem is there are a thousand ways to revive someone, and death has no real downsides to it.
Ideally Bee just needs to rebase to something that isn’t as mechanics driven, some servers have kill person one time objects to circumvent revival being so trivial, but it creates an environment where people stop being scared of antags and don’t really care about dying.
Like the real issue at hand is the servers intent does not line up with the code base, Bee is running on a code base that heavily incentivized power gaming on both sides of the coin, which indeed worked back when Golden was a thing. But now Beestation has been almost locked in a stasis chamber where everything is very dated comparatively to other servers, the lack of meaningful character creation, records creation, and persistent round knowledge do not help create an RP environment, because flavor text usually has a fun feature where you have to actually put something in that field to even enter a round, which does filter bad faith players and eases the admin work load of having to investigate things.
as if this isn’t the current case. I say remove cloning, orange man did nothing wrong. Then make life living hell for med doctors because i have a dislike for them and to strike fear into spessmen who think death is something to scoff at
Hell take it another step further, remove pod cloning and just let people make pod people in character creation.
Something I saw on other servers that I hated at first but came to love was the pH and purity system in chemistry too, because it made chemistry into something that really only the chemist should be trusted to do and made it into a more vital role to have.
Like Bee is missing out on a lot of cool stuff that does fix a lot of player complaints, Bacon med with the new chemistry system would be super cool to see, and with some other small additions it could definitely bring Bee back into the spotlight.
The main barrier to higher quality RP on bee is two things, the code base and some of the policies. Why bother writing an indepth backstory if no one is allowed to remember it the next shift, and with that this would make room for admins to do cooler multi round events, because I’ve seen it over and over again over the years where admins just burn out, admins should be able to have a more active role and be allowed to have fun and write their own characters (I love seeing admins handle issues IC by sending themselves in as a centcom official)
That has been gone for over a year at this point. You haven’t really played the game that recently?
You are allowed to know people, you can remember that you and someone else went to the bar last shift, not that a cult came and gutted you both moments later.
Yeah, that is completely normal. I’ve been an admin for a bit over a year at this point and I can say that I don’t have the same energy or time when I started. It’s a miracle that some admins stay longer than a year, since you find out pretty fast that it is the same thing over and over again, with the same drama and the same type of people who can’t seem to just enjoy the game without going pissy. Before I became an admin I didn’t understand why the oldmins hated to talk about naming guidelines that much, because to me it was a real issue that hindered roleplay and seemed so arbitrary, but after being an admin for a while I fully get why they just closed down threads that talked about it for the 100th time, it is just old and it wears at you, like so many different dramas that didn’t need to happen if people acted and thought in good faith.
I ain’t gonna quit soon, but it is a bit disheartening when you see the people you’ve come to associate with the community no longer being there, either due to petty drama or because they just moved on, the latter thing there is nothing wrong with.
If I’m going to be honest, there is plenty of room for admins to make events. It is that (at least to me) it is hard to come up with a good event, I got a fingerfull of ideas for events that I want to do before I quit, but right now it is quite hard to find the aforementioned time and energy to do these things. I want to do more events, everyone wants them, but any ss13 admin that has been around long enough will eventually loose a few fingers up their ass
On topic of permadeath. It would work on highpop servers, but hardly on bee. Every disabled crewmember leads to strong departmental crippling. Only one engineer dead? Any flood or loss of power will be unfixed til the end of the round. Same can be said for most vital jobs. And if someone says „oh more characters can arrive with respawn or joining“, no. As someone who joins from the lobby, you cannot know if someone is dead or alive, if department is in actually working condition et setra. Additionally not every player wants to play different roles and may have their own expectations/plans for the round. People still need to be able to be revived for the round to continue, otherwise every shift will be felt like lowpop skeleton crew bullshit where you are forced to do everything yourself.
Just to be a tiny bit pedantic. What if HoP gained the ability to add a small note to the job selection window? Like you can figure out from the lobby that if it is code red with secuirty being on high demand that the station is maybe getting fucked.
It’s always been such a last resort option to the point that I’ve maybe had to do it a single time in like the last seven years, and it was as a botanist, I mainly played medical and medical has easier routes to revive people without it, like brain swapping. Pod cloning is only good if the body is debrained, but people who do shit like debraining usually blood drag and husk the corpse to specifically prevent pod cloning.
I’ve been around to a lot of different servers for some time and looked at what makes them work and what the underlying issues are, command speedrunners are still pretty widely prevalent across all servers and I’ve posted my own thread on the forums about that problem in the past, metagangs are unavoidable and barely worth bringing up since Bee doesn’t have the egregious ones anymore, a lot of other servers have pretty indepth code bases backing up the core concepts of the servers, the main outlier here was actually Iris station, a more HRP server that wasn’t really running a HRP code base.
I’d have to see the number of respawns but I have a feeling that people usually don’t use the respawn feature (which lets you join back in knowing what the station’s state is). Permadeath would only drive smaller rounds to the ground if antags decide to go ahead and kill people.
There should be more less impactful objectives for antags that still drive crew conflict, or more events that aren’t as destructive as current anomalies/meteors but still force the crew to respond to some sort of crisis. Once there is motivation to work together towards some goal even lowpop rounds can be very fun.
On that note adminbus could see more use. Even making some quick stuff up like sending an intern to evaluate the station changes things up.
Death is too casual, chaos a mundane activity, same old murderers and same old sane crews every round due to how every round have an antag and some selective peoples permanently turn their antag off.
Death happens every time, the weight of its death less weighted than an air, unless one’s role is seriously crucial. Peoples who aren’t are just cannon fodders.
While our rule covers to prevent metagaming, ironically every round have an antag, which makes peoples always on paranoid and on edge.
The server aims for win and loss, binary cut good and bad with no middle ground. It is good that the server recently made some grey spots like being more lenient against self-antag, but I like to also see that in function and roles, as well as peoples participating into it.
Such binary state and the weight of each death makes every shift really dangerous and hostile to stay around. Encouraging peoples to just go for the kill if anyone wants to survive. As for the killers? “Just respawn./Just clone/ Didn’t permakilled anyways/etc.” RP isn’t enforced too much as well, where as only making 20 sentences prior to their antagonistic act during the entire round is “sufficient enough roleplay” before they go entirely murderbone without interacting anyone.
This is what I saw so far.
How can this be fixed? Well…
Honestly? This isn’t easy task to be fixed. I can’t see any hopes now because how far down the server has fallen down to a point on no-return. Its environment is now unique on its own; deadpop/each death is too critical yet taken so lightly/terribly light RP encouragement during higher pop period
death won’t help.
people have gotten too used to what happens in the game.
when people get too used, they stop getting immersed.
gameplay takes priority, mechanics take priority, because the rest just isn’t there.
to fix bee, add more content. if that sounds unreasonable, start porting things when possible. the monotony that caused us to reach this environment has to be destroyed.
anything that tries to control player behavior directly is a terrible move, including permadeath. give people a reason to roleplay better instead of threatening them on a meta level
nah, add more bees
I would let the antagonist picks/random events depend more on the crew available.
Nuke ops and cultists are not particularly fun without security, whereas aliens, changelings, zombies, heretics and spiders can be thematically very interesting without a fully armed security team.
If this was a TTRPG, I would focus the story on what roles(jobs) the players have chosen, rather than having everything fail because noone wants to be chef/engineer.
This is more like it. Something I also mentioned since 2019~2020 until I gave up was “Stop removing these contents and micromanage the players.”
This did not improved until 2024, where things are subtly getting improved very bit by bit.
Even right now, doesn’t seem drastic enough.
There have to be a content only for Bee, or at least, something that started from Bee, rather than just import something like some downstream server.
I don’t think prisoners should be sent to the station without a warden.
Also, it would be cool if there was a way for players to fill in a crime sheet for their prisoner in character creation, just like they can specify a clown, mime, cyborg, or AI name.
So far as warden/lawyer, I have had to ask the prisoners what they did, pretending that Centcom had screwed up the transfer papers. While that resulted in some good RP, not everyone wants to play a talkative prisoner, and it would be nice to have a file to support their story. This way the prisoner can lie in character, giving the warden a chance to call them out, rather than just having to rely on their word.
Wow, that’s a lot of text over a minor feature!
